The CA student CV: what to fix, with before-and-after examples
A recruiter hiring articles or industrial trainees reads a lot of CVs in one sitting. Yours gets a quick first look, and in that look they want three answers:
- What stage are you at?
- What have you actually done?
- Can you do this job?
Many CVs I see bury all three under an objective statement and a list of adjectives. Here's how to fix yours, with before-and-after rewrites for the three stages MSC works with.
Seven rules
- One page for articleship and industrial training. Two at most for a newly qualified CA with industrial training.
- Your status at the top. Your CA stage, attempts and dates come before anything else.
- Verbs and numbers. "Vouched 400 purchase invoices" says more than "involved in audit".
- Say what you did, not what the firm did. The recruiter is hiring you, not your principal.
- Keep clients confidential. Describe them by industry and size, such as "a listed auto-components manufacturer". Don't name a client without permission.
- Cut the clutter. Leave out the career objective, "hobbies: reading", your father's name, religion, marital status and full address. Your city and phone number are enough.
- Plain format, saved as a PDF. Use clear headings and no graphics. Name the file after yourself, for example
FirstName-LastName-CA-IT-CV.pdf.
The order that works
- Name, phone, email, city, LinkedIn
- CA status (plus your graduation, if relevant)
- Articleship or work experience
- Skills, as specific tools
- Achievements: ranks, exemptions, scholarships
Example 1: applying for articleship
Before
CAREER OBJECTIVE
To work in a reputed organisation where I can utilise my skills
and knowledge for the growth of the organisation.
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION
CA Intermediate - Appeared
B.Com - Pursuing
12th - 89%
SKILLS
MS Office, Tally, Hardworking, Team player, Quick learner
After
CA STATUS
CA Intermediate: both groups, September 2026 attempt
ICITSS: completed October 2026
B.Com (distance mode): second year
SKILLS
Excel: pivot tables, SUMIFS, XLOOKUP, cleaning bank statements
Tally Prime: vouchers, ledgers, GST invoicing
GST portal: prepared GSTR-1 data for a family business (6 months)
EXPERIENCE
Family business (textile trading, Surat)
- Kept purchase and sales registers for 6 months
- Matched purchase books with GSTR-2B every month
What changed: the objective has gone, your stage is exact, and every skill is one a firm can test in the interview. "Hardworking" and "team player" are claims. Tell the interviewer a story that proves them instead.
Example 2: applying for industrial training
Before
ARTICLESHIP EXPERIENCE
ABC & Associates, Chartered Accountants (Aug 2025 - present)
- Involved in statutory audit of various clients
- Worked on GST returns
- Handled income tax matters
- Assisted seniors in internal audit
After
ARTICLESHIP
ABC & Associates, Chartered Accountants, Pune | Aug 2025 - present
Eligible for industrial training from: August 2026
Statutory audit: 4 companies, turnover Rs 50-400 crore
(manufacturing, logistics)
- Tested controls from goods receipt to payment; vouched purchases
- Drafted 12 audit observations, 3 used in the management letter
Internal audit: an NBFC with 30 branches
- Checked loan documentation in 120 files; built the Excel tracker
the team used for follow-ups
GST: 8 clients
- Prepared monthly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B; matched ITC with GSTR-2B
What changed: the eligibility date is at the top, because recruiters need it first. Each block names the industry and size of the work, and each line says what you did, with a number. "Involved in" and "assisted" have gone. If you can't put a number on a line, ask yourself whether it belongs.
Example 3: newly qualified CA
Before
PROFILE SUMMARY
A dedicated and hardworking Chartered Accountant with strong
analytical and excellent communication skills, seeking a
challenging position in a reputed organisation.
After
PROFILE
Chartered Accountant: CA Final cleared in the November 2026
attempt (my second). 13 months of statutory audit and GST at a
mid-size firm, then 11 months of industrial training in FP&A at a
consumer goods company: monthly MIS, budget variance analysis,
SAP FI. Looking for FP&A or controllership roles in Pune or Mumbai.
What changed: every phrase in the "before" could describe anyone. The "after" could only describe you, and it tells the recruiter which role to consider you for.
Semi-qualified? Make your status impossible to miss
"CA (pursuing)" hides the one thing a recruiter wants to know. Write it out:
- CA Final: groups cleared (with month and year), groups pending, and your planned attempt
- CA Intermediate: cleared, with month and year
- Articleship: completed, with your firm and main areas
Attempts and marks
List your attempts plainly, with the month and year you cleared. Recruiters will ask anyway, and an honest line reads better than a gap they have to dig for. Ranks, exemptions and distinctions go in the CA status section, not at the bottom of the page.
Tailor it in five minutes per application
Keep one master CV. For each role, move your most relevant experience block to the top and adjust the skills line:
- Ind AS and consolidation for reporting roles
- controls and sampling for audit roles
- GST and TDS for tax roles
- MIS and budgeting for FP&A roles
That's five minutes per application, and it's the difference between "a CA student" and "the person for this role".
The ten-minute final check
- Your status and dates are right, and your phone number works.
- Company names and standards are spelled correctly (Ind AS, SA 700, GSTR-2B).
- Every experience line starts with a verb and has a number where possible.
- No client is named.
- It fits on one page (two at most for freshers).
- The PDF opens properly on a phone, and the file name has your name in it.
- You can talk for two minutes about every line. If you can't, cut the line.
